Berlin’s immigration office has officially replaced its long-criticized online appointment calendar with a new Online Application System. Applicants resorted to late-night refreshes, browser extensions, and even paid third-party services to secure slots. To address these issues, Berlin has scrapped its online calendar and introduced an Online Application System. This approach aims to curb appointment hoarding and ensure applicants come prepared with complete documentation.

How the Online Application System Works

Here’s what you can expect from the new process:

  1. Document Submission:

    • Use the contact form on the immigration office’s website to submit your application.

    • Upload up to 5 files, with a total size limit of 16MB (maximum 10MB per file).

    • You’ll receive a downloadable confirmation of receipt as a PDF—save this for your records.

  2. Appointment Invitations:

    • Once your application is reviewed, you’ll be offered the next available appointment if your documents are in order.

    • The waiting time for a response or an appointment can vary significantly—from weeks to months.

Residence Permit Collection Now In-Person

Previously, residence permits were mailed directly to applicants after approval. Under the new system:

  • Approved permits must be picked up in person.

  • If your application is successful during your appointment, you’ll be assigned a pickup date (typically 6–8 weeks later).

  • Can’t make the pickup appointment? Be sure to reschedule immediately at your initial visit.
